In this class the use of cross-cultural folk tales, fairy tales, myths and clients’ personal narratives will be used to stimulate the imagination, increase self-expression and promote insight for use in art therapy with all ages.  Rich in symbolic content, traditional folk tales, fairy tales, poems and myths embody timeless wisdom and inspiration that fosters faith in the process of healing and transformation.  Participants will learn how listening to stories activates the imagination and expands expressive depth, meaning and connection to one’s creative process and imagery.  Students will also learn visual and creative writing techniques for incorporating storytelling in group or individual art therapy sessions, and methods for exploring story metaphors using their own expressive response art and writing activities.  Additionally, students will learn to use storytelling, art and writing methods to increase their understanding of personal and archetypal symbols and patterns of change.
