A Way Into Watercolor

Discover the unique qualities of watercolor painting through creative, experimental  exercises.  In this workshop, you will be introduced to a variety of watercolor activities, including expressive color theory, in ways that promote both technical skills and personal self-expression for yourself and/or in your work with clients.

Exploring color exercises early on will allow participants to use watercolors without the pressure to create a picture of some thing.  Plenty of these invaluable “through the back door” methods will be provided so group members may become comfortable with their materials.  Additionally, a step-by-step guided process is offered that will enable participants to become more aware of where their interests lie, why that may be so, and how the insights gained may be explored and expressed creatively through watercolor media.  In this way, participants will have learned methods for creating watercolor paintings from conception to completion that embody foundational skills and meaningful self-expression.  Homework assignments will be included to build self-confidence and support each individual’s personal painting practice.

This class is open to all but is especially suited for art therapists, art educators, and clinicians who wish to increase self-confidence and skills in using watercolor painting for self-expression and insight.  Previous art experience is not necessary. 

A detailed Supply List will be handed out and discussed at the first session so questions may be addressed and confusion can be avoided before purchasing art materials.

The Great Round of Mandala as developed by Joan Kellogg (Mandala: the Path of Beauty, 1984) offers us an archetypal source and structure for our art-making and for self-actualization.

Mandalas, or circle forms, have been used for centuries in spiritual traditions around the world as a focus for meditation, healing and creative expression. As we give ourselves permission to become creatively involved, our experiences deepen, giving our art-making - our creations - an opportunity to evolve, to grow and to make manifest. With the intention of creating mandalas as symbolic reflections of our own personal development in the Great Round - a cyclical pattern of wholeness is generated.

We will devote 2 Thursdays a month for each stage, starting at Stage 0: Clear Light. And move through archetypal stages of the cyclical patterns of personal growth: the Void, Bliss, Labyrinth, Beginning, Target, Dragon Fight, Squaring the Circle, Functioning Ego, Crystallization, Gates of Death, Fragmentation, and Transcendent Ecstasy.*

You are invited to join our circle and commit to the exploration and development of your own creative gifts - in whatever form they may take. The circle allows each person's creativity to come forth, and nurtures it along the way - from the darkness of conception through the awkwardness of its first steps of moving into the world. Within this supportive atmosphere, we will explore a range of developmental stages through art-making, along with meditation, journaling and discussion.

In making art, we will experience our own unique creative process and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for its significance to our patterns of being. In so doing, we become aware of how our creative process may be reflected in both our artwork and our daily life.

This 6-session workshop is facilitated by artist, art therapist and art educator Patricia Otto and will focus on the first 6 chapters/ themes of Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way: safety, identity, power, integrity, possibility and abundance. Another 6-session workshop will follow that focuses on the final 6 chapters of her book: connection, strength, compassion, self-protection, autonomy and faith. Within this supportive atmosphere, we will explore a range of developmental stages through art-making, along with meditation, journaling and sharing.

In making art, we will experience our own unique creative process and gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for its rich significance in our patterns of being. In so doing, we become aware of how our creative process may be reflected in both our artwork and our daily life.

This 6-week workshop is facilitated by artist, art therapist and art educator Patricia Otto and will focus on the first 6 chapters/ themes of Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way: safety, identity, power, integrity, possibility and abundance. A second 6-week workshop follows that will focus on the final 6 chapters of her book: connection, strength, compassion, self-protection, autonomy and faith. Supporting Wellness and Emotional Balance through
Expressive Art and Writing

August 18-December 1, 2010 (No Class 11-24) $125 

                                        8 Wednesdays, every other week, 6-8pm

Women readily nurture others in their many roles but often feel too depleted or guilty to consistently nurture their own creative interests, strengths and supportive connections. In this class, expressive art and writing activities, along with exploration of mindfulness techniques, will be taught as tools for supporting women’s emotional, relational and physical well-being. These tools will be used to strengthen understanding of the transformative metaphors of the creative process and explore obstacles that block women’s use of creativity as an on-going resource for restoring emotional balance and wellness. Visual imagery and themes related to personal and professional roles will also be explored to increase awareness of individual and cultural messages that impact women’s self-esteem and identity. A wide range of expressive art materials and methods will be taught to those who wish to increase their comfort level using creative arts techniques as a source of self-discovery in their personal or professional lives. Class members will be encouraged to share readings and other resources related to creative expression and wellness topics. Please dress for mess!

Fee includes a large selection of basic art materials. Class meets every other Wed. beginning August 18. Joanne is on the adjunct faculty of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Northwestern University and is the Director of Blue Lotus Art Studio in Evanston, IL. Joanne has taught classes and workshops on many topics, including the creative process and artistic development; art, nature and spirituality; exploring fairy tales and myths through art and story writing; group art therapy and the role of women’s creativity in trauma recovery.

Creating Mandalas with Universal Shapes

Mandalas, or circle forms, are often depicted with geometric designs that are recognized throughout time and by all cultures. These five shapes are universal: the circle, cross, spiral, triangle, and square. As archetypal symbols, each universal shape carries its own meaning.

By creating mandalas using the universal shapes as a practice, we may better understand the connection between how the meaning attributed to each shape also stands for a process of human growth and development. Referencing Angeles Arrien's The Signs of Life, we will discover our preferred universal shapes at this time in our life, and begin our own mandala practice.

No previous art experience is necessary. Please bring a sketchbook or journal and favorite pen/pencil. Art materials will be available.
